Residency and Adventure

Artist Residencies have a significant impact on my practice. I seek opportunities to be alone in the woods or along the ocean. Highlighted here are three example residencies I have completed over the past twenty years. The Yukon Art Center, Parks Canada, and the US Park Service chose me as their TrailArtist to backpack the Chilkoot Trail from Dyea, Alaska, to Bennet Lake, Yukon. ArtTasmania selected me to live in a Park Rangers Hut along the Overland Track in Tasmania, where I could hike the 50 km trail from my winter base camp. The Cape Cod Seashore residency awarded me two Sea-Scape Dune Shack Residencies in Provincetown, MA. For 6 winter weeks, I swept sand, chopped wood to stay warm, walked the beach, and made drawings with my headlamp. The winter allowed me complete solitude without electricity, running water, or cell service. I later returned for a three-week summer residency. I learned to live within the rhythm of daylight closely tied to the earth, observing wind, water, animals, and my own connections to solitude.
