Mountain Journeys is a series of linoleum prints, both singular and in a large scale installation based on mountain trail running. Each run I complete imbeds in me an intense memory of the physical and mental strength required to run, over a period of days and 100’s of miles. Often I will run the same mountain over and over through radical changes of weather, making each run a completely new experience. During these remote events I record my miles, time, and geographical location via a wrist GPS. My physical memory along with the GPS data is used to create visual maps specific to each mountain: abstract, intuitive time lines that mark a spatial journey of transformation.

The contour of the mountains is based on drawings and photos of a specific place. The intersections in my prints, inside the contours, are based on routes recorded by my GPS. When not racing I manipulate the routes to create more dynamic lines by running up and down and around the trails.

My printed images flow from my interaction with the land and the experience of endurance running. Each image represents a legacy of the experience that has been decoded through the repetition of thousands of tiny carved lines. These tiny cuts are much like each foot strike for I methodically travel across the linoleum blocks with the same focus that I travel across a mountain range.
